Silicon Carbide Batts are high-load, high-temperature kiln furniture components designed to withstand extreme thermal cycles, mechanical stress, and corrosive kiln atmospheres. Used widely in ceramic tile, sanitaryware, refractory, advanced ceramics, and metallurgical industries, silicon carbide batts provide superior thermal shock resistance, oxidation resistance, and structural integrity compared to conventional cordierite or mullite kiln shelves.

Silcarb manufactures silicon carbide batts in Nitride Bonded (NBSIC), Reaction Bonded (RBSIC/SISIC), Recrystallized (RSIC), and Oxide Bonded (OBSIC) grades depending on the temperature, load, and firing cycle requirements. These batts are engineered to reduce thermal mass, improve kiln energy efficiency, and extend service life in both continuous and intermittent kiln operations.

New batch of close to zero warp(bend) oxide bonded silicon carbide batts/plates unloaded from our OBSIC kiln for supply to California. The batts/plates manufactured are usually manufactured by a high tonnage multi-axis Vibro hydraulic press. These plates manufactured with the highest quality black silicon carbide with an in-depth understanding of the grain size distribution over the thermal and mechanical properties of the products we make.

Why Silicon Carbide Batts Outperform Conventional Kiln Shelves

Traditional kiln shelves made from cordierite or mullite-based ceramics often suffer from:

  • Warping at elevated temperatures
  • Limited load-bearing capacity
  • Poor resistance to chemical attack
  • Reduced lifespan under rapid thermal cycling

Silicon Carbide Batts, by contrast, offer:

  • High hot modulus of rupture
  • Excellent dimensional stability
  • Low thermal expansion coefficient
  • High thermal conductivity for uniform heat distribution
  • Long service life even under aggressive kiln atmospheres

This results in improved firing consistency, reduced downtime, and lower total operating cost per cycle.

Applications of Silicon Carbide Batts

Silicon carbide batts are widely used in:

  • Ceramic tile kilns
  • Sanitaryware kilns
  • Tableware production
  • Refractory manufacturing
  • Advanced ceramics firing
  • Technical ceramic processing
  • Metallurgical heat treatment

Their ability to carry heavy loads at temperatures up to 1650°C makes them suitable for both tunnel kilns and shuttle kilns.

Manufacturing Process and Quality Control

Silcarb manufactures silicon carbide batts using advanced forming processes such as:

  • Isostatic pressing
  • Slip casting
  • Extrusion
  • High tonnage hydraulic pressing

All products undergo controlled drying and high-temperature firing in precision kilns to ensure structural integrity, uniform grain distribution, and consistent mechanical performance. Each batch is subjected to dimensional inspection and quality verification before dispatch.
