A Denser Element, a Longer Campaign

We recently despatched one of our 3.2 g/cc silicon carbide heaters – fully assembled and ready to install. It’s worth a few words on why that density figure matters.

Most of what determines how long a SiC element survives in a furnace comes down to how it handles oxidation. Every hour at temperature in an oxidising atmosphere slowly eats at the material, and as it does, resistance drifts and the element ages. A denser element has less porosity for that oxidation to work through – so it holds its resistance more steadily and lasts longer before it needs changing.

At 3.2 g/cc, this element sits well above conventional recrystallized SiC. For the furnace it’s headed to, that translates into fewer changeouts, more predictable performance across the campaign, and a lower cost per operating hour – which, over the life of a furnace, is the number that actually counts.

It also left our floor complete: spiral element, cold ends, terminal hardware, and mounting bracket all assembled and inspected as a single unit. What ships is ready to fit – no finishing work on site.

Four decades on, it’s still these details that decide how long an element lasts. We’re glad to keep refining them.
